Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

"The most important thing is life, and when there is life, the most important thing is freedom" Marek Edelman, Ghetto fighters leader

On 19th April 1943 the first significant urban revolt against the Nazi occupation of mainland Europe began. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was led by some 700 young Jewish fighters, amongst their leaders Marek Edelman, the heroic resistance lasted almost a month until 16 May. The entire Ghetto population of 42,000 Jews was rounded up by the SS, sent to concentration camps, and in November most were executed in a two-day shooting exercise code-named Operation Harvest Festival. Edelman survived to write the story of the uprising The Ghetto Fights.
