The flag of the second Spanish Republic was adopted in 1931 when the King fled the country having lost all popular support for the monarchy. In 1936 a repulblican government was elected uniting communists, socialists, Catalan and Basque nationalists in a 'popular front'. Within months army rebels led by Franco, backed militarily by Nazi Germany and Mussolini's Italy had launched a civil war.
