Were The Clash in '77 a Riot of Your Own?

In April 1977 The Clash released their debut album, with Strummer, Jones, Simonon and Chimes kick-starting the punk'n'politics mix that in a short time they turned into Revolution Rock, to become for many the most important band ever.

As Jake Burns of Stiff Little Fingers explains: “The big watershed was the first Clash album - that was go out, cut your hair, stop mucking about time. Although the Damned and the Pistols were great, they were only exciting

musically. Lyrically, I couldn't really make out a lot if it. To realise that the Clash were actually singing about their own lives in West London was like a bolt out of the blue.”

Our strictly unofficial '77 Clash tees celebrate both the music and the era. Available from here or click the image above.

A Garageland Philosophy

'I don't want to hear about what the rich are doing, I don't want to go to where, where the rich are going.' Strummer's words match our sentiments exactly. Imagine the type of people you would meet in that vacuous, entitled, 5-star world!

Written by Joe Strummer as a response to NME journalist Charles Shaar Murray, who, after a gig in 1976, wrote a review saying that they were "the kind of garage band who should

be returned to the garage immediately". It also served as a declaration to their fans, and their new record company, with which they had signed a contract for £100,000 in January 1977, that they would still remain the same as they were before the signing.

Our Garageland design features the orignal lyrics and is available both as a T-shirt and a limited edition print from here or click on the image above.

Still so bored with the U.S.A.

In 1977 the Clash were singing that they were so bored with the USA. So quite what they would have made lyrically and graphically of Trump goodness only knows! In truth The Clash loved the culture of America, from James Dean via brand new cadillacs and Bo Diddley to playing the Shea Stadium, NYC. The first Americana band? They knew more than most that however awful the occupant of the White House, it was the politics they were against not the people and their culture.

Getting the Punky Reggae Party started

The Clash are best known as one of the pioneers of punk. But right from the start they showed a huge interest in different musical forms. Their cover of reggae hit 'Police and Thieves' was one of the stand-out tracks of their debut album.

The original version was written and performed by Junior Murvin, recorded with Lee 'Scratch' Perry in May 1976, about Jamaican gang warfare and police brutality, violence which the band had seen replicated at the Notting Hill Carnival in 1976.

Later they would add jazz, country and western, the Blues, rap and more to their musical influences.
