The 1936-39 Spanish Civil War pitted the democratially elected Republican government against the fascist Franco backed by the overwhelming military firepower military firepower provided by Hitler and Mussolini.

The Tom Mann Centuria consisted of British volunteers living in Barcelona at the time of the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War July 1936. Our design is based on the banner of the Centuria which was named after Tom Mann, trade unionist, Marxist and one of the founders of the Communist Party of Great Britain the group were amongst the first Britons to join the Republican side in Spain before eventually signing up with the International Brigades when these were formed in October 1936.
