The crucial moment of the October Revolution was reached when the royal Winter Palace was successfully stormed. The signal to begin the assault was given by the Russian warship Aurora, firing blanks from its bow gun. In February the crew of the ship had joined the revolution to side with the Bolsheviks. Our design is based on a medal - the Order of the October Revolution - the second highest Soviet order, after the Order of Lenin, and created in 1967 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Revolution. It features the Aurora, the only ship to be awarded the medal.
