70 years ago, the Nazi onslaught on the Russian city of Stalingrad was to be Hitler's strategy to complete the defeat of the Red Army. Yet within months, after desperate fighting for every street, every house and every room the Soviet forces completed an extraordinary encirclement of the Sixth Army. This was the beginning of the end for Hitler.
War correspondent for the Red Star newspaper Vasily Grossman became Russia's greatest chronicler of both the horrors of the 1942 Siege of Stalingrad and the eventual victory over Nazism. Never afraid to upset the authorities, his classic account of the USSR's resistance to the Nazi invasion Life and Fate was not only heroic but also told the story of the Ukraine famine, the Gulags and purges and the instances of collaboration by Soviet citizens. Banned by the authorities during Grossman's lifetime, the book was eventually published under Glasnost in 1988.
